Soapbox Moment #2 This Week

The Republican YouTube Debate is on CNN, and I spent a great amount of time flipping off the TV screen when the topics of Roe v. Wade and gay marriage came up.

I am pro-choice, and pro-gay-rights, including marriage rights.

Every time I see one of those, "It's Not a Choice, It's a Child" bumper stickers, I want to rear end someone. I personally don't know that I could go through with an abortion, but being pro-choice is just that--not letting the government hold jurisdiction over a woman's body. And too many people out there confuse birth control with abortion. It's a choice, and nothing, to me, is more important than letting people HAVE a choice. If you don't support abortion, I can understand that, but why do some folks think that being pro-CHOICE is just like being pro-INFANT DEATH?

And what, exactly, is the problem with gay marriage? Why not legalize it? Why not let gays adopt? Look, if celebrities can do it, so should real people. Maybe the problem is not enough HOT celebs are gay and wanting to marry/adopt kids. Let's look at the hierarchy in the mind of a typical American male:

Lesbians Doin' It = HOT
Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton Lesbian Fantasies = HOT
Brad Pitt = He Landed Angelina, so he's gotta be HOT, but uuuhhhh not in a gay way.
Brokeback Mountain = GROSS
Rosie O'Donnell = GROSS & FAT
Melissa Etheridge = NOT PRETTY
Portia DiRossi = HOT, but not when she's with her girlfriend, Ellen DeGeneres

Maybe what needs to happen is that two hot young starlets need to fall madly in love, then very publically adopt a kid. It might then be at least thought of as "novel", like little dogs in purses or an Angelina-like collection of adopted offspring. That's probably the first step in becoming acceptable.

Did anybody catch any part of this debate as it may have related to healthcare? I didn't see anything, but I came in after it had started.

Job interview tomorrow. Wish me luck!

  1. I didn't catch the debate, but I agree with everything you said.
Pro-choice is so not pro-infant death. I'd love to hear your views on embryonic stem cell research, as that seems to be just as taboo as these 2 topics.

Also pro choice, and pro gay marriage. It's really hard for me to understand the rationale behind the opposition. I just don't get it.

  4. I've ignored the both the Democratic and Republican debates, because they are simply sound bite moments, not substantive discussions of the issues.

I'd LOVE to create a bumper sticker that says "Its not a child, its a blastocyst (subheading: support ALL forms of stem cell research"). It could cover the one I have that says "ANYONE but Bush for President".

I also agree on the gay marriage issue. A true libertarian would say let the states decide for themselves, except in cases where the law is being not being applied universally, which applies in this case since not all married couples in Massachusetts can have have their marriages recognized under state reciprocity agreements.

Look at the bright side, less than 13 months left of this moron in the White House!

  6. I have never made it a secret that I'm a Christian, but I like to think of myself as a progressive-ish Christian compared to most. Although I personally consider myself pro-life and would never have an abortion. However, I think I would like more than anything to just get rid of federal funding for abortions (which occurs in some fashion in most states - some for all abortions, some just for rape and incest). I was talking to my father about this a couple of years ago, and he said something that I thought was very true. He said, essentially, "I don't care if you have an abortion, but I don't want to pay for it." For the most part, I know that abortions are not funded by taxpayers, and honestly, I'd like to keep it that way. If you don't want the government and/or people telling you what you can and can't do with your body, then I don't see how you can expect them to then pay for something they don't agree with.

I'm completely for mandatory and comprehensive sex ed because I think it keeps teens safe and healthy - what you don't know can hurt you. I am also for free birth control. Prevention is the first step towards solving a problem.

And I'm completely for gay marriage. I have no idea how the conservative Christians got it into their head that Jesus has some kind of monopoly on marriage. If athiests can get married (they don't even believe in God!), so should the gay community. I just don't think it makes any sense.
